State legislators are collaborating with the FBI to develop new policies for screening doctors and nurses from PA who might work in other states.
HB2200 says that any person applying for a “license, certificate, registration or permit as a health care practitioner, in addition to other requirements specified in law” must submit a full set of fingerprints to the Pennsylvania State Police. Once that happens, a criminal records check will be conducted.
This is intended to fix what has been called a “communication breakdown” between Pennsylvania and the United Stated Department of Justice. Lawmakers became aware that it was not possible for medical workers in the state to obtain the background checks that are required for the Nurse Licensure Compact and the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. HB2200 would resolve that issue and empower medical professionals to apply to work outside of their home state.
The results of these background screenings will be delivered to the Department of State. From there, they will determine whether an applicant is eligible to receive the appropriate licensure.
It is equally important for every business to thoroughly screen potential employees, contractors and volunteers. Running background checks helps hiring managers make informed decisions and maintain safe workplaces. These reports can show whether a candidate has serious convictions and criminal records that are relevant to the position being sought. Running comprehensive background checks shows that an employer is conducting due diligence and taking steps to protect their business, employees and the people they serve.
